The 1km course was in the heart of San Rafael’s beautiful downtown setting with the start and finish line on 4th Street, running clockwise on 4th St., D St., 5th St., and A St.
Big Red hosted the organic beer garden located on 4th St just near the start / finish line with a great view of the racers rounding turn 4 and sprinting to the finish. Viewers enjoyed delicious, ice cold, organic beer while cheering for racers. The best part of this day was that half of the proceeds from the beer sales went to support Mike’s Bikes Foundation.
About Mike’s Bikes Foundation:
Mike’s Bikes believes that the most efficient mode of transport ever created, the bicycle is an ecologically and fiscally sustainable vehicle that can provide freedom, mobility and positive change in the lives of people who need it most. Because of this belief, Mike’s Bikes has undertaken projects that are helping to put bicycles directly into the hands of people in developing Africa.
How does it work? Mike’s Bikes customers donate their old bikes at local Mike’s Bikes stores, those bikes are then brought to their HQ in Novato, CA where they are loaded onto a 40′ shipping container as they arrive. Each container can hold up to 450-550 bicycles. The container is then sent to a partner country in Africa. Once the container arrives, it is converted into sister bike shop where local entrepreneurs are given the tools and taught the basic skills on how to run the shop and keep the donated bikes running for years. The point is to create a sustainable business that generate jobs and a profit it can grow and at the same time support its community and support cycling as transportation.
